FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- With a team-best three-over 75 from junior Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a team score of 316 today (Saturday, April 27) and is 10th with a 622 two-day total heading into tomorrow's (Sunday, April 28) final round of the Big Ten Championships being played the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort.
After opening yesterday (Friday, April 26) with a 76 -- her second-best tally of the season -- Shimel topped that performance with a three-over 75 today to position herself in a tie for 18th at 151. Starting on the back nine, she made the turn three over par after recording three bogeys. Shimel maintained her three-over pace as two front-side birdies, on Nos. 5 and 7, erased two bogeys, helping her lead U-M with a 75.
Leading U-M yesterday with a three-over 75, sophomore Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) followed today with a 79 and is tied for 27th at 154. Like Shimel, Grogan made her back-nine turn at three over, before two front-side birdies, on Nos. 2 and 5, helped her stay at two over with two holes remaining. However, a pair of closing double bogeys had her finish the day at 79 as she remains among the top 30 individually.
Sophomore Linda Luo's (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) 81 gives her a 158 (77-81) two-day total and puts her in a tie for 41st, while junior Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) followed with her own 81 tally, helping her to a 158 (79-81) and positioning her in a tie for 50th. Other Michigan second-day scores include freshman Catherine Peters (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence HS) posting an 83, putting her at 161 (78-83) and placing her in a tie for 56th; and junior Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) carding an 85 and is at 164 (80-85) and the 67th position.
First-day leader Northwestern maintained its lead with a second-round 295 and a 582 total (287-295). The Wildcats are five shots better than second-place Purdue's 587 (293-294). Michigan State is third at 600 (303-297), and Penn State is fourth at 601 (296-305). With her second straight one-under 71, Purdue's Paula Reto took over the individual lead with a two-under 142 total (71-71).
The Wolverines will close the conference tournament Sunday (April 28), with the second round starting at 9 a.m. off the 10th tee. U-M will be paired with Illinois and Nebraska.
