IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team struck first but could not hang with No. 1 North Carolina, falling, 7-2, in its opening game of the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 7) at Iowa's Grant Field.
Senior Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) took advantage of a UNC green card to put the Wolverines on the board first, at 7:48, with her fourth goal of the season. Mack accepted a pass from senior/junior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) in the circle and jammed it in past Tarheel goalkeeper Sassi Ammer. Michigan maintained the initial one-goal lead for 11 minutes, until North Carolina's Rachel Magerman evened the score at 18:48.
UNC, the 2012 NCAA runner-up, took its first advantage at the 28:31 mark and scored twice more in the final five minutes of the first half to pull away from the Wolverines.
Smith scored for the Wolverines in the second half, converting on a penalty stroke at 52:51 after UNC committed a tackle from behind in the circle. Smith registered three goals off stroke opportunities last season.
The Tarheels added their own goal off a stroke five minutes later and another in the closing minutes of the contest to pass their final advantage.
UNC outshot the Wolverines, 14-8, while Michigan posted a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Fifth-year senior Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned three saves in the Wolverine cage; Ammer stopped one of U-M's three shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up play at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 8), facing No. 18 Wake Forest at 2 p.m. CDT at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa.
