ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team battled even with the Western Michigan Broncos for 96 minutes but fell 1-0 in overtime Wednesday (Oct. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium. A score from Bronco forward Connor Furgason in the first overtime session proved to be the difference, dropping the Wolverines to 0-1-2 in overtime matches this season.
After a quiet opening six minutes of overtime, the Broncos found the game-winner that began on a feed from Sean Conerty. Conerty dished a pass to Nick Wysong, who connected with Furgason at the top of the 18, and he notched the golden goal lower left.
After a half of even play with shots tied at 5-5, Western came out with the first real chance of the match in the 52nd minute, as Conerty struck a free kick from 25 yards out that split the U-M wall as well and traffic in front of goal. The dancing shot was smothered by freshman Evan Louro (South River, N.J./St. John Vianney) diving to his right to preserve the 0-0 score line.
Michigan answered with a chance of its own in the 58th minute. U-M had its best string of events of the match, as a lefty set-piece from the left foot of sophomore Rylee Woods (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview) was tipped and rang off the crossbar. On the ensuing corner, a header from senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) went just wide of the frame.
The two sides traded opportunities through the rest of regulation, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough it needed.
Following today's non-conference battle, U-M will travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m. CDT from Wisconsin's McClimon Complex. The match will be streamed live via BTN Plus.
