Over the next few weeks, each of the eight new faces of the Michigan ice hockey roster will be introduced to fans, providing a first look at the freshman class. This week, forward Alex Talcott, another Michigan native, talks about his youth hockey career and his decision to come to Michigan.
Talcott, a native of Kentwood, Mich., recalls coming to Michigan Stadium as a child and also attending games at Yost, making the trip from his childhood home in Grand Rapids. He played two seasons with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and helped lead Indiana to a Clark Cup championship in 2013-14, scoring the game-tying goal in a 3-2 win in game five over the Waterloo Black Hawks on May 20. Last season, he recorded 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 57 games, adding two goals and four assists in 11 playoff games.
What is your first memory of coming to Michigan?
I grew up in Grand Rapids so I always came up for football Saturdays. I also came and watched a ton of Michigan hockey games at Yost.
Who was your hockey hero growing up?
Henrik Zetterberg was my hockey hero. I just really liked watching him play since the first day he joined the Red Wings. That's why I wore No. 40 growing up.
Describe yourself as a player in a few sentences.
I'm hardworking. I excel in the dirty areas of the ice.
Talk about your recruitment to Michigan and why you made the decision to come here.
It started when I was in 10th grade and continued through my junior career. When I got the offer to be a Michigan Man, I couldn't turn it down.
What do you plan on studying at Michigan?
I enjoy the sciences, and I'm working towards making biology my major.
