NANNING, China -- University of Michigan men's gymnastics undergraduate assistant coach Sam Mikulak took home a bronze medal as a member of Team USA on Tuesday (Oct. 7). Mikulak took part on pommel horse, vault and floor exercise as the United States scored a team tally of 270.369, putting them behind gold medalist China (273.369) and silver medalist Japan (273.269).
Mikulak led off the competition on pommel horse for the Americans, as he began his routine with his signature skill, the Mikulak with a scissor full from one end of the horse to the other. He executed a Magyar to Sivado sequence before dismounting with a handstand pirouette to earn a 14.708.
On vault, the two-time U.S. all-around champion led off the vault rotation with a nearly stuck Kasamatsu double full and a 15.166 and wrapped up his day on floor in the sixth and final rotation with a 15.300. The former U-M standout secured the mark after executing a back one-and-a-half to front double full and front full to double front.
Mikulak, who qualified for the all-around competition on Oct. 5, will compete in individual all-around finals that will take place on Thursday (Oct. 9).
Finals commence at 7 a.m. and will be streamed live via UniversalSports.com
