HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Sophomore Max Shuart scored his first collegiate goal, but the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 13 USA Hockey, No. 15 USCHO) fell, 6-2, at Michigan Tech (RV USA Hockey, No. 17 USCHO) on Saturday night (Nov. 1), as the Huskies swept the Wolverines in front of 4,466 fans at John J. MacInnes Ice Arena.
Andrew Copp scored his first of the season for Michigan, but the Wolverines went 0-for-7 on the power play, including two 5-on-3 opportunities, while allowing four power-play goals in a game for the first time since Dec. 30, 2010. There were seven power-play chances for both teams and 62 combined penalty minutes.
The Huskies got off to a quick start, scoring on their fourth shot on the night after a missed pass led to a Michigan Tech breakaway. Tanner Kero corralled the puck at the red line and skated in alone, beating Steve Racine, who got a piece of the puck with his blocker, at 4:15.
A little more than three minutes later, the Huskies made it 2-0 on the man advantage, as the Wolverines allowed their first power-play goal in five games. On a scramble in front of the net, Tyler Heinonen found the loose puck and scored at 7:19.
Copp answered with his first goal of the season. A drop pass by Tyler Motte set up Copp alone with the puck in the high slot. Copp hit the top corner at 9:29 to cut the Michigan Tech lead to 2-1.
But the Huskies responded with their second power-play goal of the period to regain a two-goal lead heading into the break. Blake Pietila hit David Johnstone with a diagonal pass, and Johnstone fired a one-timer past Racine at 14:28.
Michigan Tech scored two more power-play goals in the second period to push its lead to 5-1, while the Wolverines could not convert on its several chances on the man advantage.
On his team's first power-play chance of the second period, Blake Pietila finished off a series of crisp passes for a tap-in goal at 7:50. The Huskies scored another on the power play on Alex Petan's blast from the point at 14:54, chasing Racine (11 saves) from the game as Zach Nagelvoort came on in relief (10 saves).
Shuart finished off a 2-on-1 down low in the opening minute of the first period, taking a pass from Nolan De Jong and flipping the puck over an outstretched Jamie Phillips (26 saves).
Brent Baltus closed out the scoring for the Huskies, capitalizing on a defensive-zone turnover as Blake Hietala found him all alone in front for a goal at 9:59.
For the game, the Wolverines outshot the Huskies, 28-27.
The Wolverines will be off next weekend before returning home to Yost Ice Arena to face American International on Friday, Nov. 14, in a 7:35 p.m. contest. [ Tickets ]
