
Michigan Stumbles at No. 4 Wisconsin in Three-Set Defeat

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team took No. 4 Wisconsin to the limit in the second set but fell to the Badgers, 3-0, Wednesday night (Nov. 12) inside UW Field House. Set scores were 25-19, 26-24 and 25-18.
Sophomore Abby Cole and freshman Caroline Knop had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead U-M's offense. Junior Tiffany Morales had 22 digs, while Knop made it a double-double with 10 digs. Senior Lexi Dannemiller added 33 assists, and Cole tallied three blocks.
Wisconsin pulled away late to take the first set 25-19. Michigan knotted the set at late at 11-all on a kill from freshman Adeja Lambert. The Badgers then swelled their lead to three (15-12) on a Courtney Thomas service ace; it was 17-13 on a Wolverine error and 20-14 after Haleigh Nelson's kill. Lambert's block cut the lead to 23-18, and a Dannemiller setter dump fought off a set point, but Dominique Thompson's kill gave the Badgers the set-one win. Cole had five kills and Morales eight digs for U-M, which hit .116 in the set.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair to start. Wisconsin took a 7-5 lead on Ellen Chapman's kill and went up 10-6 on a Thomas termination. The Wolverines battled back to tie the set at 11 on a Badger error, but Wisconsin scored the next three points. U-M again tied the set at 14 on a Cole kill and went up 16-15 after Knop's termination. Michigan was up as late at 18-17 on a Badger service error. Michigan fell behind 22-19 but tied the set at 22 on Knop's kill. She also had a kill at 24-all, but a Kelli Bates kill and Michigan attack error put Wisconsin up 2-0 heading into the locker room. Knop had eight kills in that set.
Michigan scored the first three points of the third set, capped by a Cole termination. A Dannemiller kill gave the Wolverines a 6-5 lead, and freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright's kill put the Maize and Blue up 9-8. Wisconsin answered with a 5-0 run to go up four after a Thompson kill. The Badgers took an 18-12 lead after a Wolverine hitting error and 21-15 on a Wisconsin block. Kieffer-Wright cut the lead to 22-16 on a kill, and freshman Katherine Mahlke's kill made it 23-18 Wisconsin, but the Badgers closed out the match with a block to win in straight sets.
The Maize and Blue hit .130 on the night and had five team blocks. The two teams combined for 14 service errors, and the Badgers had a 70-58 dig advantage.
Michigan hosts No. 17 Ohio State this Saturday afternoon (Nov. 15) at 5 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena.
