This week, the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) will compete at the AT&T Winter National Championships Dec. 3-6 at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex in Greensboro, N.C. The meet, which is hosted by USA Swimming, begins Wednesday (Dec. 3) with two relays at 6 p.m. For the following three days, competition begins with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and event finals at 5 p.m.
The meet serves as Michigan's annual midseason competition in which the swimmers will attempt to get as many automatic (A) or provisional (B) qualifying times as possible. The standards are used to populate the field for the NCAA Championships in March. Last year, U-M swimmers and relay teams achieved seven NCAA 'A' times and 44 NCAA 'B' times. The meet is also structured like the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships, giving the competitors a preview of what the postseason will be like. [ Qualifying Standards

PAST SUCCESS
The last six midseason meets have been good for Michigan. Since Mike Bottom took over in 2008, the Wolverines have won five of those meets, taking first at the 2008, 2009 and 2013 AT&T Winter National Championships (formerly titled USA Swimming Short Course National Championships) and claiming back-to-back Hawkeye Invitational titles (2011-12). They also finished second at the 2010 USA Swimming Short Course National Championships, the only non-win during that stretch.
RANKINGS
Michigan came in at No. 5 in the most-recent rankings from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, released on Nov. 25. The rankings, compiled by nine CSCAA-member coaches and one media member, is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championships but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country. NIELSEN OVERSEAS
One swimmer that will not be with the team this week is junior Anders Nielsen, who is instead representing Denmark at the 2014 FINA Short Course World Championships in Doha, Qatar. He is scheduled to swim the 200-meter freestyle (Wednesday) and the 400-meter freestyle (Friday). [ Meet Website | Results | Start Lists ]
FORMER SWIMMER HONORED
On Nov. 22, former U-M swimmer David Moore (2011-14) was selected as one of the 32 students for the American Rhodes Scholar Class of 2015. He is the 27th student from the University of Michigan to receive the prestigious academic honor since its inception in 1902 and only the third athlete, following James K. Watkins (1911 - football) and Alan Seager (1930 - swimming). He will begin courses at Oxford University in England next year where he plans on pursuing a master's in computer science engineering in his first year and an MBA in his second year. [ Release ]
BOTTOM BUSY NEXT SUMMER
On Nov. 17, head coach Mike Bottom was tabbed by USA Swimming to coach the country's men's swimming and diving team at the 2015 World University Games, to be held July 4-11 in Gwangju, South Korea. This is Bottom's second stint with Team USA at the World University Games, having previously served as head men's coach at the 2013 Games in Kazan, Russia. Like in 2013, Bottom will have three of his former swimmers on Team USA's roster: Sean Ryan (2011-14), Michael Wynalda (2011-14) and Kyle Whitaker (2011-14).
NEW RECRUITS
Michigan announced its six-person recruiting class back on Nov. 21. The versatile and diverse group includes distance swimmers Stephen Holmquist (Wilton, Conn.) and Blake Maczka (Richardson, Texas), multi-event swimmers Javi Barrena (Madrid, Spain) and Jordan Ross (Roswell, Ga.), sprinter Mokhtar Al-Yamani (Tokyo, Japan) and in-state diver Collin DeShaw (Holland, Mich.).
