The two relays were marred with multiple disqualifications during the course of the day. In the preliminaries, three teams were DQed in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Florida State, Virginia, NC State) and six teams were DQed in the 400-yard medley relay (Virginia, Wisconsin, Arizona, Auburn, Notre Dame and North Carolina). In the finals, four more teams were disqualified in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Penn State, USC and Alabama in the consolation final; Texas A&M in the championship final), while one in the 400-yard medley relay (Ohio State in the consolation final).
Kyle Whitaker recorded his highest career finish in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Championships. He had previously finished sixth (2012) and seventh (2011, 2013).
The Wolverines got the last spot in the championship heat of the 200-yard freestyle relay due to North Carolina State's disqualification. U-M would have been ninth and in the consolation final otherwise. In the finals, Texas A&M got disqualified that allowed U-M to move up to seventh (from eighth).
Michigan got the last spot in the championship heat of the 200-yard freestyle by .05 seconds over conference rival Minnesota.
Connor Jaeger's times in the 500-yard freestyle were nearly identical, going 4:12.67 (finals) compared to 4:12.37 (preliminaries). He went 4:10.84 in the same race at last year's NCAA Championships.
U-M finished 10 spots higher in the 200-yard freestyle over its placement on the psych sheet (17th).
Freshmen Vinny Tafuto (a relay alternate on the 200-yard freestyle relay) and Jason Chen (who took Kyle Whitaker's spot) each received their first career NCAA All-America honors as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay.
