Bosch, Jaeger Win NCAA Titles; Michigan Takes Fourth

AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Connor Jaeger (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and sophomore Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton) each won individual national titles to lead the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, which concluded on Saturday (March 29) inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Wolverines -- the 2013 NCAA champion -- finished fourth (310 points), behind champion California (468.5), Texas (387) and Florida (387) for the program's third straight top-five national finish.

Jaeger started the night off leading a trio of Michigan swimmers in repeating as national champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle (14.29.27). He is the first U-M swimmer to win back-to-back individual national championships since Tyler Clary in the 400-yard individual medley (2009-10) and the first U-M swimmer to repeat in the 1,650-yard freestyle since Tom Dolan (1995-96). Two others finished inside the top 13; senior Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School) finished 10th (14:50.61) and sophomore Anders Nielsen (Farum, Denmark) 13th (14:51.18). Together, the three swimmers combined for 31 points.

But one of the best swims of the night belonged to Bosch, as the South African shattered NCAA, U.S. Open, NCAA Championships and pool records to win the 200-yard butterfly (1:39.33). He won the race by nearly nine tenths-of-a-second over Marcin Cieslak (Florida), who took second (1:40.19). The previous NCAA and NCAA Championships record was held by Tom Shields of California (1:39.65), who shared the U.S. Open record with Olympian Michael Phelps. Senior Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) was also in the race, finishing fifth (1:42.56).

Junior Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) was in action in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing seventh (1:53.82). He broke the school record during preliminaries (1:52.72), shattering the six-year-old record that was held by Scott Spann from 2008 (1:53.17). Funk now holds the school record in both lengths of the breaststroke.

To close out the meet, the foursome of junior Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), sophomore Peter Brumm (Cornelius, N.C./Hough), junior Justin Glanda (Rochester Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) and senior Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) finished 13th in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:52.82). To be more rested for the relay, Ortiz, Glanda and Wynalda all scratched out of the 100-yard freestyle earlier in the day, while Brumm was removed from the 200-yard butterfly.

U-M was also represented by one swimmer each in two races, though neither made the final. Senior Ryutaro Kamiya (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) took 23rd in the 200-yard backstroke (1:42.43), and fifth-year senior Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate) was 37th in the 100-yard freestyle (43.95).
