EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team did not allow a shot on goal and outshot the Northwestern Wildcats but settled for a 0-0 draw Sunday (Sept. 21) at Lakeside Field. With the tie, U-M remains unbeaten in Big Ten play at 0-0-2.
Michigan sophomore Rylee Woods (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview) had two of U-M's five shots on goal on the afternoon, the first coming in the 36th minute. The lefty free-kick specialist sent in a service from 30 yards out that skipped inside the six and was spilled by Northwestern goalkeeper Tyler Miller. However, the mess was cleaned up by the Northwestern defense.
Freshman Ahinga Selemani (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) came off the bench and gave the Wildcats headaches in the first half, and he nearly found U-M's breakthrough in the 62nd minute as he executed a half-field run and dished a low cross to senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) that was knocked out of bounds for a U-M corner.
Later in regulation, the U-M defense tightened the screws, clearing away several quality Wildcat chances. Senior Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) did not have to make a save in the game but was active in the air on cross attempts throughout the match.
Selemani went on to have U-M's final chance of the match in the 95th minute, as he collected a service at the top of the 18. His sliding shot from the top of the box went wide left before the match went to a second overtime, during which neither side had a quality opportunity.
U-M (1-3-2, 0-0-2 Big Ten) will have its longest break of the season thus far -- a full week -- before returning to U-M Soccer Stadium to host the Penn State Nittany Lions Sunday (Sept. 28) at 2 p.m.
