ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team outshot the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions, 14-13 overall, including 10-6 in the second half, but was unable to overcome a Connor Maloney goal in the 57th minute, falling, 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 28) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines also had seven corners to a pair for the Nittany Lions and controlled the majority of quality chances in the finishing third throughout.
Michigan faced a stiff test against the PSU defense, a unit that has allowed only three goals on the season thus far. Offensively, Penn State had a 5-1 lead on shots through the first 20 minutes. It was not until the 23rd minute that senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) darted down the right flank and sent a low cross inside the area, but the service failed to connect with his teammates.
The Maize and Blue followed up with three shots in the next four minutes. The U-M back line, headed by freshman defender Billy Stevens (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park), bottled up many of PSU's offensive chances heading into the intermission even at 0-0.
Michigan had one of its best chances of the match in the 52nd, as freshman Nate Kohl (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) sent a low cross from the right flank of the finishing third. The effort skipped through the box past a sliding senior midfielder Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./St. John's) as the scoreline held 0-0.
After U-M controlled play and possession in the first 10 minutes of the second, Penn State's Maloney hooked up with Mikey Minutillo and Owen Griffith, who sent a through ball down the right side. Minutillo then sent a service inside the six that Maloney put home for the lone goal of the match.
Sophomore Rylee Woods (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview), who caused havoc on the left side of the pitch all day, nearly knotted the match in the 62nd. The left back ducked and weaved past a trio of PSU defenders sent a ball inside the six but could not connect.
Ten minutes later, freshman Ahinga Selemani (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) cut inside from the right wing and ripped a low shot that was turned away in pristine fashion by PSU keeper Andrew Wolverton. Outside of a late flurry by the Wolverines, the final chance of the match for U-M came on a link-up play from Arnone and junior forward James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School), as Arnone had a blast from 20 yards out that was saved out of bounds for a corner.
The Wolverines will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 1), hosting in-state opponent Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium.
