INCHEON, South Korea -- Senior Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls School) and freshman Samantha Yeo (Singapore/Raffles Institution) of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team wrapped up their appearances at the 2014 Asian Games on Friday (Sept. 26) where they each represented their home countries.
Lau raced in two individual events and one relay for Hong Kong. She helped propel Hong Kong to a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay by swimming in the morning preliminaries of the event and assisting in a second-place finish in the heat. Individually, she earned a spot in the evening finals in both the 100 and 200-meter backstrokes. Her best finish came in the 200-meter backstroke: she took fifth with a time of 2:14.23. She placed seventh in the 100-meter backstroke, touching the wall at 1:02.78.
Yeo was busy swimming for Singapore, competing in five races over the course of four days. She swam the breaststroke leg of Singapore's 4x100 medley relay, helping her team take fourth overall. Yeo also raced in four individual events: the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststrokes, and the 200-meter individual medley.
For Lau and Yeo, this marked their second career appearances at the Asian Games, which features 45 nations competing in 36 sports. Both swimmers raced at the 2010 edition of the Games held in Guangzhou, China.
The Asian Games also marks the final event in a busy summer of international swimming for U-M swimmers. Along with these Games, Michigan was represented at the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow, Scotland), the Youth Olympics (Nanjing, China), the Pan Pacific Championships (Gold Coast, Australia) and the Junior Pan Pacific Championships (Maui, Hawaii).
