MADISON, Wis. -- Zach Hyman (2G, A) and Zach Werenski (2G) each scored twice, and Zach Nagelvoort made 17 saves for his first Big Ten shutout to lead the University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 6-0 win over Wisconsin Saturday night (Jan. 24) in front of 13,699 fans at the Kohl Center. The Wolverines have won seven straight games for the program's longest winning streak since the 2010-11 season.
Dylan Larkin and Tony Calderone each added a goal and an assist, as Michigan scored four first-period goals to put the game out of reach early. On his line's first shift of the night, Larkin gave the Wolverines the lead for good on a shot from an improbable angle. After Wisconsin's clear attempt deflected off a skate behind the net, Larkin retrieved the puck and fired from behind the net off the pad of Joel Rumpel and in at 1:12 to make it 1-0.
Just 51 seconds later, Hyman scored in his seventh straight contest, skating out from behind the net for a wrist shot over the shoulder of Rumpel at 2:03, chasing the Wisconsin goaltender from the game. Hyman's seven-game goal-scoring streak is the longest by a Wolverine since Brendan Morrison scored in eight straight games during the 1995-96 season.
Later in the period, with Landon Peterson in net for the Badgers, Tony Calderone scored his third goal of the season, from a sharp angle on the right wing at 15:46.
Werenski completed the dominant opening period for Michigan, taking a drop pass from Andrew Sinelli and firing a quick wrist shot past Peterson at 19:00. The Wolverines outshot Wisconsin, 19-4, in the period.
Michigan pushed the lead to 5-0 early in the second period, as Hyman scored his second of the game, driving the net from the right wing and flipping a backhander past Rumpel at 1:16.
Nagelvoort made his toughest save of the night later in the second period, as Morgan Zulineck was left alone in front for a one timer off a pass from behind the net. Nagelvoort quickly challenged and made the stop with 4:00 to go in the period.
Werenski notched his second goal of the game at 14:46 of the third period, firing a quick wrist shot past Rumpel on the short side for his first career two-goal game.
Michigan killed a late Wisconsin power play to help Nagelvoort preserve the shutout, his first of the season. Michigan finished the night 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, the team's 12th perfect night on the PK this season.
The Wolverines will take on Michigan State next Friday (Jan. 30) in a 7:35 p.m. contest at Joe Louis Arena.
