COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman Abby Kastroll scored the game's only goal in the 36th minute, and the Wolverine defense held their fifth opponent scoreless, as the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Maryland on Thursday (Oct. 1) at Ludwig Field. Behind Hinz's second shutout of the season, the Maize and Blue improved to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten action.
"The number one thing we had to do tonight was get back to being a gritty team," said head coach Greg Ryan. "It was really important after the Michigan State loss to prove to ourselves that we're a much better team than we showed. I told them after the game that they're back -- 'this is who you are.'"
The Wolverines generated scoring chances from the opening whistle, recording three corner kicks and three shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Outside back Madisson Lewis got herself involved in the offense throughout the match, firing two shots early on, including one from the top of the box that was batted down by Terrapin keeper Rachelle Beanlands and cleared out of bounds for U-M's fourth corner kick.
Maryland's Alex Anthony had three of its four shots in the opening half, including one in the 27th minute from the top right corner of the six-yard box. Wolverine goalkeeper Megan Hinz dove to her right and got a hand on it and then jumped up and pounced it to keep the Terrapins scoreless.
The Wolverines final broke through in the 36th minute as senior Christina Ordonez bent a ball into the penalty box from the left wing, where a Maryland defender failed to clear the ball, and Kastroll was there to punch it in from just outside the top of the six-yard box.
Michigan was on top 1-0 going into the halftime break and led 8-4 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.
"Abby (Kastroll) had a fantastic performance in every aspect of the game," said Ryan. "She just dominated everywhere she played tonight and it was only fitting that she found the scrappy goal in the penalty box and buried it -- we couldn't be more pleased with Abby."
Right of the gates in the second half, junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian got an open look from the right side of the six-yard box, but her shot rolled across the mouth of the goal and just wide of the left post.
Kastroll created a number of chances in the second half as well. In the 60th minute, she dribbled the ball past two Maryland defenders into the penalty box and ripped a lefty shot just wide of the right post.
Michigan's stingy defense including its back line of Lewis, senior Christina Murillo and junior Anna Soccorsi, as well as senior Christina Ordonez and freshman Sura Yekka, who shared time at right back, held the Terrapins to nine shots, including just two on goal. Hinz saved both of those shots on target to earn her second shutout of the season and seventh of her career.
"I thought the defense was outstanding tonight," Ryan added. "In four games in the Big Ten, we have three shutouts so they've been performing really well. Maryland made a tactical change and put two strikers on our two center backs so we put an extra back in the middle and it was great that we were able to execute playing in a different tactical system. They were rock solid tonight."
