
Wolverines Grind Out Win over Oral Roberts

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held Oral Roberts to just five fourth-quarter points to grind out a 61-44 win over the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 29) inside Crisler Center. With the win, Michigan moves to 6-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Junior Siera Thompson led the Michigan offense with 16 points to go with two rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes of action. Freshman Hallie Thome turned in 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds, with freshman Boogie Brozoski chipping in eight points off the bench. Michigan turned a minus-five rebounding margin in the first half into a plus-four for the game, outrebounding ORU, 37-33. U-M shot 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the floor while holding Oral Roberts to a 32.1 percent (18-for-56) showing.
U-M never trailed in the contest, which featured just one tie as the teams exchanged baskets to start. U-M took its first double-digit lead of the game at the 4:27 mark of the second quarter off a Thome layup for a 27-16 lead.
Michigan hit the halftime break with a 31-20 lead on Oral Roberts behind 10 points from Thome and seven from Thompson. U-M shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and managed just one triple in 10 attempts. ORU held a 22-17 advantage on the glass but Michigan forced the Golden Eagles into 12 turnovers to negate the advantage.
Michigan started to gain some distance in the third quarter as a freshman Nicole Munger hustle play led to a steal. She flipped the ball up to Thompson, who converted a three-point play for a 16-point Michigan lead (44-28) as the bench exploded with 5:24 left in the third. Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty scored on another Michigan steal on the ensuing possession to put the Maize and Blue on top by its largest margin to that point, 46-28, with 5:08 on the third-quarter clock.
U-M held Oral Roberts to just five points in the final frame, leading by as many as 18 en route to the 17-point win.
Michigan wraps up its five-game homestand on Thursday (Dec. 3), hosting Pittsburgh as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Crisler Center. [ Tickets ]
