ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team led wire to wire to equal its best start in school history at 7-0 in an 82-45 win over Pitt on Thursday night (Dec. 3) inside Crisler Center as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty led the way once again for the Wolverines, pouring in 24 points to go with three rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Freshman Boogie Brozoski had 13 points, two rebounds, two assists a block and a steal to join Flaherty in double figures. Freshman Nicole Munger scored eight, along with senior Siera Thompson. Junior Danielle Williams paced Michigan's attack on the glass, grabbing a career-best 10 boards in just 17 minutes. Michigan shot 51.5 percent (34-for-66) from the floor, the fifth time this season the Wolverines have eclipsed 50 percent.
U-M jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Pitt trimmed the lead to two twice in the first quarter, but the Wolverines scored the final four points of the period for a 22-13 lead after 10 minutes.
The Maize and Blue opened the second on a 9-0 run, capped by a Flaherty jumper at the top of the key to force a Pitt timeout at the 7:16 mark with U-M up 31-13. Michigan took its first 20-point lead of the game on a triple from Brozoski at the corner for a 39-19 lead with 3:04 left before the half.
The Wolverines went to the locker room with a 46-24 lead after shooting 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the floor in the first 20 minutes. U-M held a 15-11 advantage on the glass and forced Pitt into 15 turnovers. Flaherty led the way with 11 points, with Thompson scoring eight and Munger and senior Madison Ristovski each going for six points.
Brozoski scored five straight Wolverine points, blocking a Pitt shot in between, forcing the Panthers to call timeout with 4:07 left in the third quarter as U-M led 57-31.
Michigan led by as many as 37 in the win and held Pitt to just 10 fourth-quarter points. U-M has held its last three opponents to less than 50 points for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
U-M hits the road next, traveling to Princeton to take on Tigers Sunday (Dec. 6). The tip is slated for 4 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
