The University of Michigan women's basketball team (7-0) hits the road for the second time this season, heading to Princeton to take on the Tigers (5-1) on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 6) at Jadwin Gymnasium. Tip is set for 4 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN2 from Princeton, New Jersey.
Michigan has tied its best start in program history at 7-0, matching the starts during the 1999-2000 and 2011-12 seasons. Michigan's seven straight wins is the longest streak to open a season under fourth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
Princeton and Michigan are meeting for the second straight season and for the third time in program history. Sunday's game is the first trip to Princeton for the Maize and Blue. Assistant coach Melanie Moore spent five seasons at Princeton prior to coming to Ann Arbor.
Michigan expects to have a solid crowd at Princeton as head coach Kim Barnes Arico (New York/New Jersey), Katelynn Flaherty (New Jersey), Nicole Munger (Pennsylvania), Jillian Dunston (Maryland), Maria Backman (New York) and Boogie Brozoski (New York) each have East Coast ties. In addition, assistant coach Melanie Moore spent five seasons at Princeton before coming to Ann Arbor when Barnes Arico got the job in 2012.
Michigan is averaging a Big Ten-best 87.9 points per game, an 18.0-point increase from last season's average of 69.9. U-M has topped 90 points three times already this season after only reaching the mark one time last year, coming in an overtime win against Ohio State (Jan. 10). Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty leads the way, averaging 19.6 points per contest, up five points from her average last season.
As a team, the Wolverines rank in the top 10 in seven different statistical categories. U-M is third in field goal percentage (53.3), third in scoring offense (87.9), fourth in scoring margin (+34.4), fifth in rebound margin (+17.0), sixth in total assists (141), seventh in three-point field goal percentage (40.5) and ninth in assists per game (20.1). In addition, Hallie Thome leads the country in field goal percentage at 71.1.
Through seven games, U-M is shooting 53.3 percent from the floor to lead the Big Ten and rank second nationally. Michigan has gone over 50 percent from the floor against Detroit, Xavier, USC Upstate, Hartford and Pitt while just missing the mark against Binghamton (49.3 percent) and Oral Roberts (46.3 percent). U-M reached the 60-percent mark (45-for-75) against USC Upstate, marking the first time since Dec. 29, 2012, that the Wolverines shot at least 60 percent.
Princeton (5-1) was last in action over the Thanksgiving holiday, winning two games out west over UC Irvine and Seattle U. The Tigers feature four double-figure scorers in Annie Tarakchian (15.8 ppg), Michelle Miller (14.8 ppg), Alex Wheatley (10.2 ppg) and Amanda Bernsten (10.0 ppg). Princeton knocked off Michigan last year at Crisler Center.
Michigan has three players scoring in double figures in Katelynn Flaherty (19.6 ppg), Hallie Thome (12.0 ppg) and Siera Thompson (10.6 ppg). In addition, two more Wolverines are averaging at least 9.0 points per game.
