With the win, Smiddy becomes the first Wolverine to win a conference title in the 200-yard IM since Margaret Kelly in 2010. Smiddy's time of 1:56.74 is now third on the school's all-time list for that race behind Kelly (1:55.41) and junior Marni Oldershaw (1:56.18). Oldershaw joined Smiddy in the event final tonight, finishing third (1:58.14).
All three U-M swimmers improved on their preliminaries finishes in the finals of the 500-yard freestyle. In the event final, freshman Gillian Ryan jumped three spots to finish third (4:39.86), while sophomore Claudia Goswell tied for seventh (4:43.24), improving on her initial eighth-place finish from preliminaries. In the consolation final, freshman Hannah Moore finished 12th (4:43.29), also moving up one spot from the morning's preliminaries.
The Wolverines had two of the top nine swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Ali DeLoof swam in the event final and finished fifth (22.36), while sophomore Madeline Frost raced to the wall to win the consolation final, officially finishing ninth (22.69).
The lone relay of the night was the 200-yard freestyle relay where the quartet of Frost, DeLoof, junior Zoe Mattingly and Smiddy took fifth (1:29.51).
Four divers were in action over in the diving well. Senior Carey Chen had the highest finish, winning the consolation final and finishing ninth overall (331.25). It was a new career-best score by more than 20 points.

Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On the evening's swims ... "The 200-yard freestyle relay was solid. We went better tonight than we did at U.S. Nationals, so that was certainly encouraging. I think we can do better on that relay, but nevertheless, it was a solid swim all the way around. Gillian (Ryan) came way back to take third in the 500-yard freestyle, and Claudia (Goswell) sneaking in there to take seventh was pretty awesome. The 200-yard IM. What more can you say? That was awesome, to see a freshman step up and win that. Clara had two great swims today. Same for Marni (Oldershaw). Both of them should be very proud of how they did tonight."
On the 50-yard freestyle ... "Seeing Maddy (Frost) win the consolation final got everyone fired up. That was great to see. Then Ali (DeLoof) came back in the event final and was just off her time from the morning. They both swam very hard."
On Carey Chen ... "We thought she might make the final, but she came up just short. To her credit, she didn't let that get to her and absolutely cranked it up in the consolation. She blew everyone away."
On his message to the team going into day three ... "Just to keep doing what we're doing. We're swimming well and diving well. We're in a great position to get better as long as we keep executing. That's the key to staying ahead of Indiana and catching Minnesota. To have a chance, you have to be hitting on all cylinders."
