Michigan played in its seventh outdoor game overall (dating back to the Oct. 6, 2001 "Cold War" game at Michigan State), improving to 3-3-1 in outdoor games, with a 2-1-1 record against the Spartans outdoors. Michigan has played the most outdoor games of any team in college hockey.
U-M recorded its first win outdoors since a 4-1 victory against Ohio State in the Frozen Diamond Faceoff on Jan. 15, 2012, at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The Wolverines defeated Michigan State in an outdoor contest for the first time since the Big Chill at the Big House, a 5-0 win over the Spartans on Dec. 11, 2010.
Defenseman Michael Downing (G,A) and Cutler Martin (G) each scored for the Wolverines, giving the Michigan defense 16 goals in 24 games this season, In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen scored eight goals in 35 games. Downing and Zach Werenski lead all Big Ten defensemen with five goals on the season. Michigan has the No. 6 scoring defense in the nation with 70 points (16G, 54A).
Zach Hyman extended his point-scoring streak to nine games (9G, 11A) with an assist on Selman's empty-net goal. Hyman leads the Big Ten with 37 points (16G, 21A) in 24 games this season. Hyman's current scoring pace (1.54 points/game) is greater than Kevin Porter's (1.47 points/game) during his Hobey Baker Award winning campaign in 2007-08.
Two Michigan players have point streaks of three games or more, with Zach Hyman (nine games, 9G, 11A) leading the way. Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (2A) has points in four straight games (7A).
Michigan outshot Michigan State, 37-32, on the night. Michigan is fourth in the nation with an average of 35.00 shots per game and has outshot its opponents in 18 of 24 games this season, with an 12-6-0 record in those contests.
Junior forward Justin Selman (G,A) continued his career season, notching his fourth multiple-point game in the last five outings. Selman has a career-best 13 points (6G, 7A) this season, after recording 13 points (5G, 8A) in his first two years combined at Michigan.
Sophomore goaltender Zach Nagelvoort made 31 saves to earn the win in net and is now 6-2-0 in Big Ten play and has a conference-leading 1.74 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in conference games.
