COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Carey Chen, juniors Elena Ghormley and Sarah Kamstra and sophomore Keegan McCaffrey of the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team will compete at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships Thursday through Saturday (March 12-14) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. The four divers will participate in all three events, which include three-meter (Thursday at 1 p.m. ET), one-meter (Friday at 1 p.m. ET) and platform (Saturday at 11 a.m. ET).
The quartet will attempt to join the previously announced seven swimmers who have already qualified for the NCAA Championships, slated to be held March 19-21 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Of the four divers, only Chen has previously qualified to the NCAA Championships, as she went to last year's meet as a junior. Chen has also been the team's top diver this season, accumulating team-best scores on one-meter (331.25), three-meter (336.50) and platform (295.30).
This will be the second trip to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships for both Ghormley and Kamstra; Ghormley finished as high as 13th on platform, while Kamstra was 12th on platform, 13th on three-meter and 15th on one-meter. This will be McCaffrey's first career trip to Zones.
NEW NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFYING PROCEDURES
There are new qualification procedures for the NCAA Championships. At Zones, the top five female and top four male divers on each event at each zone will automatically qualify.
Additional place finishers in each event at each zone will be eligible based on the number of student-athletes from that zone who finished in the top 16 in that event at the previous year's NCAA Championships. All eligible divers must have achieved the zone qualifying score prior to the NCAA Championships in all events they wish to participate. For the men, Zone C is allotted five spots on one-meter, eight on three-meter and six on platform. For the women, it is eight spots on one-meter, nine on three-meter and eight on platform.
Any diver that qualifies to the NCAA Championships will be allowed to optionally enter any other event(s) at the championships, provided that the diver finished in the top 12 at the same zone meet and has achieved the zone-qualifying score for that event prior to the NCAA Championships.
