ROSEMONT, Ill. -- For the second consecutive season, five members of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team received All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday (March 17). Senior Sachi Sugiyama, sophomores Nicole Artz and Talia Chiarelli, and freshman Brianna Brown were all named to the first team, while senior Brooke Parker received second team honors.
Individuals are named All-Big Ten based on their conference rank across all four events and the all-around. For example, if a gymnast ranks first in the Big Ten in the all-around, she receives 10 points, while the gymnast ranked 10th in the all-around receives one point. The gymnasts with the 12 highest point totals are named to the first team, while the next 12 are named to the second team (includes ties).
Michigan has the most overall selections of any team. Artz and Sugiyama each receive All-Big Ten honors for the second time in their careers, as Sugiyama was a first-team pick in 2013 and Artz was a second-team selection in 2014. With Brown, Chiarelli and Parker added, Michigan has now had 60 gymnasts earn a total of 132 All-Big Ten honors -- 104 on the first team and 28 on the second team.
The No. 6-ranked Wolverines aim to defend their conference title Saturday (March 21) as they host the Big Ten Championships at Crisler Center. Michigan will be in the second session (4:30 p.m.) alongside Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State. The other session will start at 11:30 a.m. and feature Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State and Rutgers. Both sessions will be shown live by the Big Ten Network.
Tickets for the Championships are still available by either visiting MGoBlue.com/tickets or calling (866) 296-MTIX.
