ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Sachi Sugiyama, sophomore Nicole Artz and freshman Brianna Brown of the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team were each named regular-season All-Americans, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women announced on Friday (March 27).
This is the third season the NACGC/W has awarded gymnasts with regular-season All-America honors. All-Americans were determined by a gymnast's regional-qualifying score (RQS) in the final Troester/GymInfo rankings released this past Monday. Gymnasts ranked Nos. 1-8 nationally on each event and the all-around received first-team status, and the gymnasts ranked Nos. 9-16 were honored as second-team selections.
Each gymnast received two honors: Artz on balance beam (first team) and in the all-around (first team); Brown on uneven bars (first team) and in the all-around (second team); and Sugiyama in the all-around (first team) and on floor exercise (second team). In the final edition of the rankings, Artz finished tied for third on balance beam (9.920) and fifth in the all-around (39.550), while Sugiyama was eighth in the all-around (39.515) and tied for 13th on floor exercise (9.925). Brown was tied for fifth on uneven bars (9.920) and tied for 14th in the all-around (39.430).
With Sugiyama, Artz and Brown included, five U-M gymnasts have now received NACGC/W regular-season All-America honors. Other past honorees include Joanna Sampson (seven combined from 2013-14) and junior Austin Sheppard (one in 2014).
The Wolverines will be back in action next Saturday (April 4) at the NCAA Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The competition will begin at 6 p.m. at St. John Arena. Michigan can qualify to the NCAA Championships with a top-two finish.
