Michigan Opens Spring Season in Challenging Conditions at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The sixth-ranked University of Michigan rowing team opened the 2015 spring season in challenging conditions against No. 8 Princeton and No. 3 Brown on Lake Carnegie. Battling a consistent head wind of 15-20 miles per hour and temperatures just above freezing, the Wolverines sent 1V4, 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 crews to compete in that order on Saturday morning (March 28).
Michigan's 1V4 crew started off the day, rallying for a second-place finish in the final 1,000 meters of the race to pull ahead of Princeton. The Wolverines finished in 8:37.20.
Next up was the 1V8 race, for Princeton's Class of 1987 Trophy. Michigan fell back early but stayed in contact with Princeton and Brown for most of the race, finishing third in 7:28.90 behind Princeton and Brown.
With conditions becoming more favorable as the morning went on, the Bears also earned wins in the 2V8 and 2V4, as Michigan's 2V8 crew clocked in at 7:29.60 for a third-place finish, and U-M's 2V4 crew finished third of four crews with a time of 8:14.30.
The Wolverines will continue spring racing next weekend (Saturday, April 3) in Charlottesville, Virginia, against Clemson and Virginia, which is currently ranked second nationally.
