MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off its outdoor campaign this weekend with the Jaguar Opener, which wrapped up Saturday (March 7) at the University of South Alabama. Just 10 Wolverines competed during the meet, which serves as a rust-buster for the Wolverines as they venture into the outdoor season.
The highlight of the day came from sophomore Sami Michell, who took the 400-meter hurdles crown in 1:02.57 and was also a member of U-M's winning 1,600m sprint relay team. Michell was joined by junior Maya Long, freshman Jackie Wold and senior Chinyere Onimo during the relay, which finished in 4:04.22 to place first among six groups.
Field athletes had a strong showing, with fifth-year senior co-captain Elly Mioduszewski nearing her PR in the hammer throw at 155-6.5 ft. (47.41m), about one foot short of her career best but still good for a fifth-place finish. Graduate transfer Naomi Grablowski also competed in the event, making her Wolverine debut.
Though freshman high jumpers Claire Kieffer-Wright and Jordan Moore-Willis competed during this weekend's meet, both were trying out a new jumping approach specific to the outdoor version of the event. Neither recorded a height, but head coach James Henry was pleased with the duo's progress at this early juncture of the season.
U-M's distance medley relay (Shannon Osika, Danielle Pfeifer, Maya Long, Brook Handler) team and junior Cindy Ofili will be making the trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas, next weekend for the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas. The outdoor season resumes with the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge at the end of the month (March 27-28).
