Michigan Sweeps Four Varsity Races Against Louisville

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan rowing team completed its regular-season schedule with a strong performance against Louisville on Senior Day today (Saturday, May 2) at Belleville Lake.
The Wolverines had the winning boat in all four varsity races on a beautiful, clear morning with little wind and temperatures approaching 70 degrees. The first varsity eight crew -- Hannah Sherman (coxswain), Felicity Cain, Louisa Freeman, Jessica Eiffert, Kendall Brewer, Alex Spaulding, Karla McDaniel, Kaitlin Wright and Sarah Hudnall -- scored a convincing win over the Cardinals, clocking in at 6:24.10 for an open-water win over Louisville (6:34.50).
"We're moving in the right direction," said Michigan head coach Mark Rothstein. "Our intent is to have tremendous preparation which will lead to success at Big Tens in two weeks. So we're excited; I think it was a good start."
Michigan's second varsity four crew notched the Wolverines' first win, recording the best time of the day amongst the fours with a 7:16.00 finish. Next, Michigan's first varsity four won convincingly in 7:17.50, finishing 10.5 seconds ahead of Louisville.
In the most exciting race of the day, Michigan's second varsity eight pulled away from Louisville late to win by half a boat length in 6:30.10, just 2.5 seconds ahead of Louisville 6:32.60.
At the end of racing, Michigan honored its varsity senior class -- Allison Boss, Eiffert, Sherman and Spaulding -- in a ceremony on the boathouse dock.
The Wolverines will be off next weekend before traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the Big Ten Rowing Championships at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park, with the two-day competition beginning Saturday, May 16.
