TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team set a pair of PRs in the field on the first day of competition today (Thursday, May 7) at the University of Toledo. With competitors in both the hammer throw and shot put, it was the Wolverine throwers setting the pace for the weekend as the Maize and Blue put the finishing touches on their performances one week before the Big Ten Championships (May 15-17).
Fifth-year senior Elly Mioduszewski led the way for U-M in a 23-woman field, finishing fifth in the hammer with her collegiate-best throw of 173-1.75 ft. (52.77m). The Dexter, Michigan, native registered an improvement of more than five feet over her previous career best, set two weekends ago at Hillsdale's Gina Relays (April 24). Her toss today marks the farthest by any Wolverine this season, and she was not the only Wolverine thrower to set a new PR at Toledo's Outdoor Track.
Freshman Bailey Baker threw 159-8 ft. (48.66m), improving by nearly 13 feet over her previous best throw as a Wolverine to finish 13th overall. Two places behind her, freshman Kayla Deering tossed 155-11.25 ft. (47.52m). Deering also competed in the shot put, where she placed sixth in the first flight with her throw of 13.94m (45-9 ft.)
The Maize and Blue will resume competition tomorrow (Friday, May 8) at Toledo's Outdoor Track and Field facility, with the javelin beginning at 9 a.m. On the track, events kick off four hours later at 1 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
N O T E S
• Graduate student Naomi Grablowski also competed in the hammer throw as an unattached competitor. Grablowski threw 152-9 ft. (46.55m) and finished 16th.
