ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team put up six runs in the bottom of the fifth and fought through two rain delays in defeating Northwestern, 12-4, Friday night (May 8) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan also hit a pair of home runs on its way to the 30th win of the season.
Senior Jackson Glines hit Brandon Magallones' 2-2 pitch over the wall in right field, giving Michigan a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Maize and Blue made it 2-0 in the third as sophomore Carmen Benedetti's infield single scored senior Kevin White.
Northwestern put up its first run in the fourth on Connor Lind's RBI double. Michigan answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick's fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left. Northwestern pinch hitter Mike Trucco cut U-M's lead to 4-3 with a two-run home run to left, but a Glines RBI groundout put the Wolverines up 5-3 after five.
Michigan plated six runs in the sixth frame, sending 11 men to the plate. Junior Cody Bruder led off the inning with a double to the gap in left. He went to third on freshman Jake Bivens' bunt single. Bruder scored on a failed pickoff attempt, and White brought in Bivens with a single to right. A groundout from senior Eric Jacobson scored Patrick. Cronenworth doubled down the line in right to bring in White. Singles from Benedetti and Bruder scored the final two runs of the frame.
