Evan King
Three former University of Michigan men's tennis players competed in a trio of events this past weekend, with two Wolverines winning the championships in their respective events.
Former U-M standout Evan King defeated Tyler Hochwalt in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, in the championship match to win the Zimbabwe F1 Futures Tournament on Friday (June 19). King only dropped two sets in the tournament en route to the singles title. King, alongside partner Anderson Reed, also made it to the finals in doubles portion of the event but was unable to complete the sweep.
King was a three-time ITA All-American and two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year, finished his Wolverine career with a 116-34 singles record and is Michigan's all-time leader in combined singles and doubles wins with 195. He finished his senior campaign with a 32-5 singles record, including a 23-1 mark in dual matches and a perfect 10-0 record in Big Ten play.
Michigan tennis alum Bill Godfrey helped lead the U.S. to its first championship in 11 years as it defeated Spain, 2-1, to win the Austria Cup at the Senior World Team Tennis Championships last weekend in La Baule, France. The U.S. defeated Belgium, Moldova, the Netherlands and Italy prior to defeating Spain in the championship flight. Godfrey won all three matches that he competed in, earning two doubles victories (Belgium and Italy) with partner Mike Tammen and a singles win against Moldova.
Former Wolverine Jason Jung competed in the Wimbledon Qualifiers on Monday (June 22), losing to Marius Copil of Romania in straight sets.
Jung, a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, compiled an 83-64 singles record during his four-year tenure in Ann Arbor. He was a unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection as a senior, closing out the singles portion of his collegiate career with a 25-12 record, marking his best statistical year at Michigan.
