VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team opened its fall season on Sunday morning (Sept. 20) at Belleville Lake, racing in eights against one varsity crew from Michigan State. The event consisted of four different racing segments, with three U-M varsity eight crews racing against the one MSU crew in each segment. All pieces were four minutes long, with a stroke rate capped at 26 strokes per minute.
In each piece, Michigan's first varsity eight boat prevailed, with U-M boats finishing 1-2 in each race.
"The biggest thing that stood out is that we had three boats that were competitive, which speaks to our depth," said Michigan head coach Mark Rothstein. "I think this time of the year depth is really what you're trying to develop and having a lot of possibilities going into the spring."
In the first racing piece, Michigan's 1V8 prevailed, with the U-M 3V8 and 2V8 not far behind. All three Michigan boats were a boat length or more ahead of Michigan State's varsity eight crew. In the second piece, the 1V8 finished the four-minute segment with open water ahead of the U-M 2V8. Michigan State's varsity eight finished third with just a few seats ahead of the U-M 3V8.
The third racing segment mirrored the second piece, with Michigan's 2V8 putting more distance ahead of the MSU varsity crew, while the fourth racing segment also produced similar results, with the U-M 3V8 nearly pulling even with Michigan State.
"I think we're in a good place right now, but it's very early," Rothstein said. "We have a long way to go."
The Wolverines will host Ohio State in their second fall scrimmage on Sunday, Oct. 4, with races beginning at 11 a.m. on Belleville Lake.
