PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Lydia Sydnor scored two goals -- the first of her collegiate career -- to headline the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's 2-0 victory against Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 27) at the Scarlet Knights' Track/Field Hockey Complex. It marks the Wolverines' third shutout win this season.
Michigan largely controlled play early in the first half but struggled to get off shots in the circle. Sydnor buried the Wolverines' first shot on goal, capitalizing on a loose ball in front of the cage to put the Wolverines on the board at the 20:15 mark. Junior/sophomore Carly Bennett fed the ball into the circle, and as it was batted around, Sydnor knocked it out of the air for her first goal.
Sydnor struck again early in the second half, at 36:38, tipping a shot from junior/sophomore Casie Ammerman to pad the Wolverine advantage. Junior Sina Lampe corralled the ball near the left side, carried it into the circle and fed it back to the top right side of the arc, where Ammerman fired a shot on goal. Sydnor, camped out in front, got her stick on it and redirected it just past Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes.
The Wolverines continued to carry play for much of the half, but Rutgers claimed some momentum with three corner opportunities in the final 10 minutes. Michigan turned away every Scarlet Knight opportunity, including a pair of late saves from sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson, to maintain the shutout.
Rutgers outshot the Wolverines, 8-7, and outcornered them, 5-3. Swenson earned five saves in the winning effort, while Hayes posted two saves for the Scarlet Knights.
