ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team exploded for four goals in the second half to highlight a 5-0 win against Pacific on a chilly Friday evening (Oct. 2) in front of 308 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It marks the Wolverines' second straight shutout victory and fourth of the season.
After a slow start produced very few first-half scoring chances for either team, the Wolverines claimed the momentum late in the frame, scoring on a corner opportunity with just 1:34 on the clock to earn the halftime advantage. Sophomore Katie Trombetta found the board with the initial shot, accepting the ball from senior Lauren Thomas along the arc, carrying it right across the circle and driving a blast to the lower left corner. It is her fourth game-winning goal of the season.
Thomas helped set up the Wolverines' next strike, coming just 15 seconds into the second half, when she lifted an aerial into the Pacific 25 off the opening whistle. Senior Shannon Scavelli came away with the ball, carried it into the circle and fed a pass to freshman Lydia Sydnor, who dove to tip it into the cage. It marks Sydnor's third goal in two games.
Junior Sina Lampe added another tally at 44:57 -- her third this season -- on a great individual effort in the circle. She accepted a pass near the goal line from senior/junior Caroline Chromik, carried it to the center of the circle and sent a reverse chip back into the right corner.
The Wolverines scored twice more in the final 10 minutes of the contest as freshman Marleise Emrhein netted her first collegiate goal, and sophomore Morgan Malone scored her second -- and first of the season -- on similar one-touch goals in front. Emrhein's fellow freshmen helped set up her goal; Leah Cardarelli stole the ball near the 25, dished it into the circle to Sydnor on the right post. Sydnor fed the ball across goal mouth, and Emrhein knocked it in to the left corner. Senior/junior Emily Ashken assisted Malone's goal, similarly feeding it across the front of the cage, where Malone batted it out of the air from the left post. It is Ashken's first collegiate point.
Michigan outshot the Tigers, 11-4, but was outcornered, 5-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson and senior/junior Chris Lueb combined for the shutout; Swenson made three saves, while Pacific's Laure Pujade stopped six of U-M's 11 shots on goal.
