ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program added another preseason recognition to its repertoire as Baseball America announced on Monday (Jan. 25) that the Wolverines are the No. 15-ranked team among NCAA Division I teams.
Led by fourth-year coach Erik Bakich, Michigan was ranked No. 34 in the College Sports Madness Preseason Ranking in mid-January. Additionally, the Maize and Blue had previously been ranked No. 23 in the Perfect Game poll earlier this January and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll in late December.
After finishing the 2015 season with a 39-25 overall record, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the Louisville Regional championship game, Michigan is the lone Big Ten Conference school to appear on Baseball America Top 25 list.
The 2016 season will get underway on Feb. 19 when the Wolverines head to Port St. Lucie for a four-game series against Canisius before embarking on a nine-day, eight-game California road trip to face six different opponents, including a game against No. 8 California (Feb. 29).
Wrapping up Michigan's 19-game road stand to jumpstart the 2016 season is a three-game series against No. 9 Oklahoma State. In addition to California, the Cowboys are the only Baseball America preseason top-25 opponent on U-M's regular-season schedule.
Michigan opens its home schedule against UIC on Friday, March 25, and will end the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, March 27. U-M will begin Big Ten action with a three-game road series against Northwestern, April 1-3.
