ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Will Lockwood's last-minute goal sealed a 4-3 victory for the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team over Michigan Tech on Friday night (Oct. 21) at Yost Ice Arena.
Fighting off a penalty, Max Shuart picked off a pass behind the net and found a streaking Lockwood in the slot to seal the epic game-winner for the Maize and Blue.
Jake Slaker opened the scoring at the 13:05 mark of the opening period. Michigan Tech's goaltender Devin Kero made the initial save on Nolan De Jong's shot from the point, but the puck fell on the stick of Slaker for the first goal of the contest.
Tony Calderone doubled the Wolverine lead 2:45 into the second period, poking the puck ahead of him to enter the offensive zone and then taking a shot from the top of the circles.
Michigan Tech cut the deficit in half on a short-handed marker by Alex Gillies, as the visitors gained an odd-man rush on a misplay by Michigan. Dylan Steman brought the puck into the zone and found a crashing Gillies in front of the net.
Slaker scored his second of the night five minutes into the third period in similar fashion, as a deflected shot from the point by Sam Piazza was deflected by Lockwood to the stick of Slaker.
The lead was short lived as Michigan Tech countered less than 30 seconds later with a goal by Alex Smith, followed by the tying goal at the 9:29 mark by Reid Sturos.
With the win, Michigan improves to 125-93-4 against Michigan Tech and has won the last three meetings against the in-state rival.
Michigan returns to Yost tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 22) to conclude the weekend series against Michigan Tech at 7:30 p.m. [ Tickets ]
