ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 1996 NCAA national championship team returns as part of Weekend of Champions festivities as No. 12-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (2-1-0) hosts former CCHA foe Michigan Tech (1-4-1) on Friday and Saturday night (Oct. 21-22) at Yost Ice Arena.
• The 1996 national championship team will be honored during intermission on Friday night, as part of the Weekend of Champions festivities. U-M defeated Colorado College, 3-2, on March 30, 1996, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to win the NCAA DI championship, which was the first for Michigan in 32 years.
• Michigan and Michigan Tech have met 221 times since the series began in 1927. The Wolverines are 124-93-4 all-time against the Huskies. Only Michigan State (300) and Minnesota (269) have played more games against Michigan than Michigan Tech.
• The Wolverines won the only meeting last season against their former CCHA rivals, 4-2, on Dec. 30, 2015, in the Great Lakes Invitational championship game en route to their 17th GLI title.
• Michigan swept the last weekend series against Michigan Tech Nov. 1-2, 2013, in Ann Arbor -- 3-2 in OT and 2-1.
• Michigan Tech head coach Mel PearÂson spent 23 seasons as an assistant/associate head coach at Michigan, starting at U-M in 1988, before Red Berenson's fifth season behind the bench.
• Freshman forward Jake Slaker was awarded the Big Ten First Star accolade this week after registering a goal and an assist on Saturday. Slaker became the second consecutive U-M to garner conference honors after Hayden Lavigne was named Second Star the week prior.
• Jack LaFontaine became the second consecutive freshman to start between the pipes for the Wolverines on Saturday (Oct. 15), putting in a brilliant 28-save performance en route to his first collegiate win.
• After scoring the game-winner on Saturday (Oct. 15) against Ferris State, defenseman Sam Piazza has now scored in all three contests thus far for the Maize and Blue.
