DALLAS, Texas -- Using sub-70 final rounds from sophomore Nick Carlson (68, -3) and junior Kyle Mueller (69, -2), the University of Michigan men's golf team rallied today (Tuesday, Oct. 25) with a closing 351 (-4) team total to move up four spots and finish the fall season third with a 1,069 tally at Baylor's Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
"It felt good to finish the fall season with a push in the final round," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "Royal Oaks was a really fun course to play, and I know the guys enjoyed it."
In U-M's fifth and final fall event held at the Royal Oaks Country Club, the Wolverines found themselves playing in a non-traditional 6-count-5 format. Falling as far as 10th and reaching as high as second in the 11-team field during the opening 18 holes, U-M yo-yoed to the first of two 359s team total on Monday's (Oct 24) opening day of play. Mueller's 68 (-3) and Carlson's 69 (-2) paced the Maize and Blue, while senior Reed Hrynewich had the round of the morning. Using five front-side birdies, including three straight to close, he chipped away after his seven-over start to finish at 73.
Using that momentum, Hrynewich followed with a 71 (E) in the second round, while fellow senior Tom Swanson rebounded from an opening 77 to fire a team-best 70 (-1) as the Wolverines recorded a second straight 359, finishing the day at 718 and in the seventh position.
The Wolverines united once again in the final round to shoot a 351 (-4) team total -- tying for the day's top team total -- behind Carlson's 68 (-3) and Mueller's 69 (-2) added with Swanson and junior Ian Kim's 71s (E) and jump four spots on the leaderboard to post their fourth top-three finish of the season with a 1,069 total.
Mueller led U-M for the second time this fall, posting his third top-10 finish and tying for sixth at 209 (-4). Carlson followed with his fourth top-10 finish in five events, tying for ninth at 210 (-3).
"We were able to move up on the final day several times in the past few weeks, and that's the sign of a good team," said Whitten. "I want to see us in contention to win more often, and to do that we'll need this kind of effort for every round, and we're capable of that."
The Wolverines have completed their five-event fall schedule. The Wolverines will now close out the first semester and begin winter training -- not seeing tournament action until February. The spring season opens with the annual Big Ten Match Play Championships, set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, in Palm Coast, Florida.
"I really like the depth of this team and the competitiveness," added Whitten. "We have a few winter projects to take care of with some of our players then we'll hopefully take it up another notch in the spring season."
