BURLINGTON. Vt. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team was unable to capitalize on five power-play opportunities, falling to the University of Vermont, 3-0 on Friday night (Oct. 28) at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Freshman goalkeeper Hayden Lavigne made a career-high 39 saves in the losing effort.
The hosts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 19:38 mark off a turnover in Wolverines zone. This was the first time an opposition has scored first on U-M this season. Vermont doubled the lead midway through the opening period on a shot from above the faceoff circles by Matt Alvaro on a pass from Kevin Irwin.
Michigan had its best chance at the 14:40 mark of the second period when sophomore Brendan Warren took a shot from the hash marks, but the puck sailed just over the crossbar to preserve the Catamounts 2-0 lead.
After U-M converted on the first four penalty kills, Vermont was finally able to convert on the man advantage. Brian Bowen's power-play goal on a tip-in from the point put the Catamounts up 3-0 at the 8:21 mark of the third period.
Michigan will conclude the New England swing tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 29) with a trip to Dartmouth College for the eighth meeting in program history with the Big Green. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Michigan met Dartmouth in the 1948 NCAA championship final, the first ever, organized in part by then-Michigan head coach Vic Heyliger. The Wolverines earned an 8-4 win over Dartmouth for their first national championship.
