ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team was deadlocked with Wisconsin, 1-1, after two overtimes in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament on Sunday (Oct. 30) at U-M Soccer Stadium but will move on to the semifinals after rallying to win the shootout, 4-2.
Michigan made all four of its penalty kicks, coming from sophomore Reilly Martin, senior Nicky Waldeck, senior Anna Soccorsi, and finishing it off, junior/senior Ani Sarkisian. Wisconsin's first attempt ricocheted off the cross bar, while the second attempt was stopped by sophomore/junior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson. The Badgers made their third and fourth PKs, but Sarkisian's make sealed the deal for the Wolverines.
Jackson recorded seven saves in the game in addition to stopping the critical penalty kick during the shootout, though the Badgers did outshoot the Wolverines, 18-10.
With the game tied 1-1 at the half, both teams produced dangerous chances, but the match remained knotted heading into the final 10 minutes. In the 84th minute, Sarkisian laid a ball off for Waldeck to run onto in the box, but Waldeck's shot was just a hair too high. With less than 30 seconds left in regulation, U-M earned a corner kick, and Sarkisian's last-second rainbow shot was punched over the bar by Wisconsin keeper Caitlyn Clem.
Michigan got on the board early, in the 26th minute, when senior Jessica Heifetz sent a pass out wide to Martin from the center of the field. Martin turned her defender and dribbled down the outer edge of the penalty box before serving a perfect ball to Waldeck, who flicked the header inside the near post.
Wisconsin's Emily Borgmann scored 10 minutes later, as Rose Lavelle played a ball toward the right touch line for Payton Wesley to run on to -- Wesley got off a low-driven cross before it could go over the end line, and Borgmann punched it in from the top of the six-year box.
The last time the Wolverines went to a penalty kick shootout was in the 2012 NCAA Sweet Sixteen, where Penn State advanced 3-2 in PKs.
As the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament, Minnesota will now host the semifinals (Friday, Nov. 4) and finals (Sunday, Nov. 6) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Michigan will take on Minnesota at 2 p.m. CDT, while Rutgers and Northwestern will battle in the other semifinal match. The championship match will take place at 1 p.m CST on Nov. 6.
