PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played to 1-1 draw at Rutgers on Friday (Oct. 7) at Yurcak Field.
Outshooting the Scarlet Knights 3-1 in the opening 15 minutes, the Wolverines were rewarded for their persistence in the 15th minute. U-M got on the board first as sophomore Francis Atuahene selflessly fed freshman Jack Hallahan at the top of the box, where he used a clinical finish at the top of the six for the early 1-0 advantage.
Rutgers answered back in the 38th minute, as Niel Guzman notched his third goal of the season for the Scarlet Knights, as he took a feed from Dante Perez. He took a touch and found the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1, and Michigan headed into the half with a 10-6 shot advantage.
Following a scoreless second half and back-and-forth first overtime session, the Wolverine defense -- led by junior goalkeeper Evan Louro, who had four saves on the night -- withstood the Scarlet Knight pressure in the early portion of the session.
Michigan's final chances came fast and furious as time wound down. Scarlet Knight goalkeeper David Greczek made a pair of stops in the final minute off the foot of Hallahan with 49 seconds left, while sophomore Ivo Cerda had a header with 12 ticks left that was also stopped by the goalkeeper.
