ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team had six players score in double figures and topped 100 points for the second straight game in a 107-35 win over Niagara on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) inside Crisler Center.
Junior Katelynn Flaherty led all scorers with 14 points in just 17 minutes of action. Freshman Kayla Robbins recorded the first double-double of her career, going for 12 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Maria Backman set a new career high with 13 points. Sophomore Boogie Brozoski recorded 13 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in a team-high 25 minutes. Freshman Kysre Gondrezick scored 12 points to go with six assists and three steals, while sophomore Hallie Thome just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Niagara opened the scoring, but Michigan answered with six straight to force a Purple Eagle timeout at the 7:10 mark following Thome's second basket of the game. The Michigan run continued following the stoppage as U-M scored 13 unanswered points for a 13-2 lead with 5:18 left in the first frame. Michigan led 29-12 after the first 10 minutes of action, paced by eight points apiece from Thome and Brozoski.
Michigan held Niagara to just six points in the second quarter, using a 27-6 run over the quarter for a 56-18 halftime lead. Gondrezick led the way offensively in the first 20 minutes, scoring 11 points with three assists and a pair of steals. Flaherty had 10 points, and Thome had eight points and seven rebounds, with Brozoski chipping in eight points and four rebounds of her own. Michigan shot 55.3 percent (21-for-38) form the floor while holding Niagara to 30.0 percent (6-for-20).
The Maize and Blue did not let up in the second half, outscoring the Purple Eagles 51-17 in the final 20 minutes for the 72-point win. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico emptied the bench in the second half, as each Wolverine who saw the floor played at least 11 minutes. In addition to Robbins, freshmen Akienreh Johnson (eight points, three rebounds) and KeAsja Peace (four points, four rebounds) each found the scoring column for the first time.
