COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- For the second time in the past seven days, the University of Michigan men's soccer team pushed the nation's No. 1-ranked Maryland Terrapins to double overtime but fell to the No. 1 seed Terps, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament Sunday (Nov. 6) at Maryland's Ludwig Field.
Michigan, playing on 24 hours rest, outplayed the Terrapins in the opening 30 minutes in chances and shots, but the Wolverines were struck with an unfortunate moment in the 29th minute. Maryland forward Gordon Wild whipped in a ball from the left wing inside the six, but the venomous cross deflected off a U-M defender for an own goal as the Terps took a 1-0 lead.
The Maryland lead was short lived, however, as the Wolverines equalized in the 42nd minute. A set piece restart was sent in from 40 yards out by senior Rylee Woods that found the head of senior captain Lars Eckenrode just outside the six. Eckenrode's effort was headed backwards to senior Tyler Anderson at the top of the box, where he finished lower right through traffic for the first goal of his career in what turned out to be the final match of his Wolverine career.
Just before the half, Maryland once again took the lead on a link-up play, as Chris Odoi-Atsem cut through the U-M defense and dished a ball off to DJ Reeves, who took a pair of successive touches, then finished in close to send the match into the half with the Wolverines on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.
Coming out of the halftime intermission, the Wolverines knotted the scoreline minutes later as sophomore Robbie Mertz played a little ball to Woods on the left wing. Woods then sent in a majestic cross at the top of the six that found the head of a bounding sophomore Francis Atuahene, who finished top right for his eighth goal of the season, knotting the match at 2-2.
From then on, a Michigan team playing on the short rest showed an immeasurable amount of spirit, standing toe to toe with the Terps and bent but did not break. A critical moment of the match came with seconds to go in the second period, as Maryland's Jake Rozhansky nearly ended it, hitting the left post through traffic from the top of the box. However, U-M's goalkeeper, junior Evan Louro, was injured on the save attempt and was unable to continue in the match with senior/junior Braden Horton entering the match in his stead.
In overtime, U-M generated a couple half chances, most notably a shot on goal from freshman Jack Hallahan but largely found itself on the defensive side of the ball in the first overtime. In the second session, it was Maryland's George Campbell who ended the match with 7:04 to go, taking a ball at the top of the box, turning and finishing lower right past Horton to end the match with the 3-2 scoreline.
The defeat ends Michigan's season, while the Terps advance to play Michigan State in the tournament semifinals.
