STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was defeated by sixth-ranked Penn State, 6-1, in the opening contest of Big Ten play on Thursday night (Dec. 1) at Pegula Ice Arena. Junior forward Tony Calderone tallied the lone Wolverine goal in the losing effort.
The hosts cracked the scoreboard 7:56 into the opening stanza, as Andrew Sturtz buried a loose puck in front of the net for his 11th of the season.
Senior netminder Zach Nagelvoort came up with a trio of saves in the later minutes of the first period to preserve the Nittany Lions one-goal advantage heading into the first intermission.
Penn State added three more goals in the second period, including a power-play opportunity at the 15:18 mark by Trevor Hamilton on a screened shot from the point.
Sturtz scored his second of the night 12:06 into the third period, 30 seconds prior to Calderone scoring the lone Michigan goal of the contest. The Trenton, Michigan, native scored his seventh marker of the season off a pass from classmate Dexter Dancs.
