ATLANTA, Ga. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in a 92-52 win over Georgia Tech as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Thursday evening (Dec. 1) at McCamish Pavilion.
Junior Katelynn Flaherty scored a game-high 25 points to lead four Wolverines in double figures while also adding five assists. Freshman Kysre Gondrezick went for 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench, while sophomore Hallie Thome had 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Junior Jillian Dunston turned in her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds, with senior Siera Thompson recording 11 points, five rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Michigan shot 50 percent (33-for-66) from the floor and held a 44-38 advantage on the glass while holding GT to 29.3-percent (17-for-58) shooting.
Michigan scored the first nine points of the game, getting four points from Thome, three from Thompson and a pair of free throws from Flaherty, and ended the first quarter with a 23-16 lead.
Gondrezick took over in the second quarter, going for 10 points as Michigan took a 20-point lead, 45-25, on her finish with the foul at the 1:07 mark. GT scored the final three points of the frame to send Michigan to the locker room with a 45-28 lead. Gondrezick led the way for Michigan with 12 first-half points as she helped Michigan weather the storm with Thome on the bench in foul trouble. Thome had 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting, with Thompson chipping in nine. Michigan shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes (16-for-32) while holding GT to 35.5-percent (11-for-31) shooting.
Michigan opened the third quarter on a 12-3 run, getting seven points from Flaherty, a layup from Dunston and a three-point play from Thome to cap it for a 57-31 lead at the 5:17 mark. The run continued as a Gondrezick three pushed Michigan's lead to 66-31. U-M held GT scoreless for 6:08 of game time and only allowed nine points in the third quarter.
The Maize and Blue led by as many as 42 points in the game, taking a 40-point win when the final horn sounded.
Michigan continues its road ways on Monday (Dec. 5), traveling to Cincinnati to take on Xavier. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
