ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team took on the Wisconsin Badgers for the second straight night Saturday (Dec. 10) at Yost Ice Arena. Following a 7-4 defeat the night before, the Wolverines rebounded to earn their first Big Ten win of the season, by a score of 4-1.
Michigan opened the scoring with 8:20 left in the opening period as senior forward Alex Kile put one past Wisconsin goalie Jack Berry with a man advantage. Kile's third goal of the season was assisted by freshman forwards Will Lockwood and Jake Slaker.
Just one minute later, Michigan gave itself a 2-0 lead when junior forward Cutler Martin scored his fourth goal of the season. Slaker picked up his second assist of the day on the goal.
It was a quiet second period until Wisconsin's Grant Besse netted a goal to cut the deficit in half with 2:02 left. The Wolverine defense held the rest of the period, giving U-M a 2-1 advantage heading into the final period.
With a 2-1 lead and 1:56 left in the final period, Michigan freshman goalie Hayden Lavigne made a quick glove save from the slot in a 6-on-4 situation to help seal the victory. Lavigne played one of his finest games this season, saving 34 out of 35 shots, including 15 in the final period.
Wisconsin emptied their net late in the third period, allowing Michigan to score two goals in the final minute. Junior forward Tony Calderone and freshman forward Adam Winborg each netted unassisted goals to give U-M a 4-1 victory.
The Wolverines will enjoy the holiday break before returning to action on Dec. 29 to take part in the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational against Michigan Tech.
