ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (6-7-1, 0-2-0-0 B1G) hosts Wisconsin (7-6-1, 0-0-0-0 B1G) over the weekend in a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena. Action begins at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday (Dec. 9-10).
• Michigan and Wisconsin meet for the 136th time in program history. The two teams first met in January 1923, as Michigan played Wisconsin at Weinberg Coliseum in the first varsity contests in program history. The Wolverines swept that series, 2-1 (2 OT), 1-0, and went on to split the series in Wisconsin the next weekend.
• The Wolverines have not lost to Wisconsin in their last 11 meetings, with the last Badger win coming on Jan. 11, 2014. Michigan has won eight matchups since then, including a 5-1 victory in the 2015 Big Ten tournament quarterfinal. The last time Wisconsin won at Yost was on Nov. 26, 2005 (3-2).
• Last season, U-M scored 20 goals over four contests, going 2-0-1-1 against the Badgers. The last meeting at Yost was a wild 6-6 tie that ended with a Wolverine shootout win.
• Michigan has killed 87.5 percent (63/72) of its penalties thus far, 10th best in NCAA DI. Their five goals against on the penalty kill are also ranked tied for eighth in NCAA DI.
• Michigan leads all of NCAA DI in blocked shots per game with a 19.3 average heading into the weekend.
• Sean Ritchlin, a U-M alum and member of the 1996 and 1998 national championship squads, will be the color commentator for Friday's contest on ESPNews.
UP AHEAD: Michigan will enjoy the holiday break before returning back in action on Dec. 29-30 when the Wolverines compete in the 52nd Annual Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena. In the final GLI at the Joe, the Wolverines will take on Michigan Tech, and the winner will face off against either Michigan State or Western Michigan in the championship the following day.
