
Halftime Lead Does Not Hold Up at No. 6 Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held a one-point halftime lead but faltered in the second half as No. 6 Maryland came away with a 76-56 win on Wednesday night (Feb. 17) at the Xfinity Center.
Senior Madison Ristovski tied a season high with 15 points while going for six rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes. Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty had 17 points, with classmate and Maryland native Jillian Dunston chipping in eight off the bench. Michigan shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) for the game, with Maryland coming in at 49.2 percent (29-for-59).
Michigan jumped out to an early 11-4 lead on a Flaherty steal and coast-to-coast layup with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter. Michigan took a 15-10 lead after the first 10 minutes on a Dunston layup out of an out-of-bounds play. Michigan forced eight Maryland miscues in the first quarter
The Wolverines extended their lead to 19-12 on back-to-back jumpers from Ristovski and Flaherty en route to a 21-12 lead at the 7:51 mark of the second quarter on another Ristovski score.
Maryland answered with a 10-0 run for its first lead of the game, 22-21, with 4:34 on the second-quarter clock. The teams traded baskets until Ristovski made good on another lefty layup and then found Flaherty for a three-pointer off an offensive rebound for a 28-24 lead.
U-M forced a missed shot on Maryland's final possession of the half, taking a 30-29 lead into the locker room. Flaherty led the way for Michigan with 10 points, with Ristovski going for eight points and four rebounds. Dunston chipped in six off the bench as the Maize and Blue shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from the floor. Maryland shot 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the floor but committed 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Ristovski hit a corner triple from sophomore Hallie Thome to open the third quarter, but Maryland regained a 35-33 lead moments later. Junior Siera Thompson scored her first points on the night on Michigan's next possession, hitting a left-wing triple to push Michigan back in front by one, 36-35.
With Michigan keeping it a one-possession game at 42-40, the Terps went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:19 for a 51-40 lead. Thome hit a pair of free throws at the end of the third to send Michigan to the fourth down nine, 51-42.
Maryland extended its lead to double digits on its first possession of the fourth quarter on a corner triple, as the Terps kept a double-figure lead the rest of the way en route to the win.
Michigan returns home for the final time this season on Saturday (Feb. 20), hosting Penn State as part of Senior Day at Crisler Center. U-M's senior class will be honored prior to the game, which begins at noon. The contest can be seen on the Big Ten Network. [ Tickets ]
