ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Clara Smiddy and freshman Siobhán Haughey each won conference titles to keep the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team in first place after the third day of the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Feb. 19) at Canham Natatorium. Smiddy won the 100-yard backstroke (51.80) -- the program's first Big Ten champion in that event since Jennifer Crisman in 2001 -- while Haughey won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.51) to claim her second individual title in as many days. The race for the title on Saturday will come down to Michigan (891) and Indiana (845.5), as the third-place team, Minnesota, is 233 points behind (612.5).
Indiana overtook Michigan in the team standings after the 200-yard freestyle, and it stayed that way until the 100-yard backstroke, when a total of six Wolverines combined for 124.5 points to re-take the lead. Following Smiddy was senior Ali DeLoof in second (52.14), senior Zoe Mattingly in a tie for fourth (53.52) and sophomore Gabby DeLoof in sixth (53.62). Also scoring were freshman Catie DeLoof in the consolation final (15th overall, 54.14) and junior Maddy Frost in the bonus final (22nd, 55.04). During the morning's preliminaries, Ali DeLoof set a new program record (51.56).
Haughey set U-M, Canham Natatorium and Big Ten Championship records with her title-winning swim (1:43.51), which was also an NCAA A cut. The last Wolverine to win a Big Ten title in the 200-yard freestyle was Lindsey Smith in 2007. Haughey is the first U-M swimmer to win at least two individual events at one Big Ten Championships meet since Emily Brunemann won the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle in 2008.
"You can see our girls fight for every point out there," said head coach Mike Bottom. "As a coach, that's all you can ask for. We're not getting many breaks and nothing is coming easy, but we're fighting for what we can get. We'll get some rest and be ready to swim tomorrow morning."
For the second day in a row, Michigan got crucial team points in the diving well, led once again by senior Sarah Kamstra on the three-meter springboard. She finished seventh, a one-place improvement after being seeded eighth entering the final. Three others scored points -- junior Allie Murphy (12th, 321.10), senior Nicole Honey (15th, 301.40) and junior Keegan McCaffrey (17th, 288.25). Five of the six divers in action set new career bests, helping U-M outgain Indiana by 23 points.
The Wolverines picked up an NCAA A cut and broke the school record in the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of Smiddy, sophomore Emily Kopas, Haughey and Ali DeLoof went 3:31.98, almost a second-and-a-half better than the old school record (3:33.32).
U-M got two top-five finishes in the 400-yard IM, as freshman Yirong Bi took third (4:08.56) and senior Marni Oldershaw claimed fifth (4:12.05). The Wolverines didn't have anyone in the final of the 100-yard butterfly, but they did in the consolation, with Mattingly finishing ninth (53.87).
Kopas picked up some points via a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.56). Another sophomore, Carolyn McCann, moved up a few spots to take 11th overall (1:01.26), while junior Madison Horton (19th, 1:02.21) and freshman Jamie Yeung (22nd, 1:02.48) picked up a few team points in the bonus final.
Joining Haughey in the final of the 200-yard freestyle were Gabby DeLoof in sixth (1:46.42) and Gillian Ryan in eighth (1:48.10). Freshman Becca Postoll (15th, 1:47.49) and sophomore Claudia Goswell (20th, 1:48.39) also scored points.
The Big Ten Championships conclude tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 20) at Canham Natatorium. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m., with finals commencing at 6:30 p.m.
