PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team, despite a ferocious fourth quarter comeback that featured four straight goals in the fourth quarter, fell, 12-10, to the Penn Quakers Saturday (Feb. 20) at Franklin Field. Junior Ian King led U-M with five points (3G, 2A), while senior Kyle Jackson also had a hat trick.
The Wolverines outshot the Quakers, 9-6, in the first quarter but trailed 2-1 with the marker coming from King at 11:59 on a roll from X. Down 4-1 midway through the second stanza, King added his second of the game at 11:50, beating Penn goalie Reed Junkin offside high. King then fed linemate Jackson, who finished with a beautiful behind-the-back shot to bring it to 4-3.
Jackson added his second of the day at 3:29 on a pure hustle play. Following a ground ball pickup, the Canadian dodged, beat his man and finished short side on a lefty overhand rip to tie the game at 4-4.
Heading into the half even, the Quakers rattled off six unanswered goals to start the second half, building a 9-4 lead. In the early portion of the fourth, Jackson put an end to the run with his third goal of the day 19 seconds into the fourth. The Jackson goal also gave U-M a lifeline, as it drew a two minute non-releasable penalty on an illegal hit to the head, but U-M was unable to capitalize, instead allowing its second man-down goal of the contest to 11-5.
King tacked on his fourth point of the day at the 14:06 portion, feeding freshman Brent Noseworthy in close for his first collegiate goal. After the two teams traded goals, momentum swung U-M's way for the time being, as junior close defender Stefan Bergman fed senior attackman Peter Kraus, who finished on a half-field run to bring it to 12-8.
Kraus made it back-to-back goals with another at 2:45, while King chipped in his third of the day at 1:29 to add to the 4-0 run, before time ran out on the U-M comeback attempt.
