EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team outscored Northwestern by six points in each of the second and third quarters and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the closing minutes to preserve a 70-65 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday evening (Feb. 23) at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Michigan entered the final quarter up by 11, but Northwestern scored the first seven points of the frame to cut Michigan's lead to four points just 2:57 into the frame. Junior Siera Thompson converted on a backdoor layup and sophomore Katelynn Flaherty nailed a triple from the right wing on the next possession to push Michigan's lead back to nine points, 55-46, with 6:18 left.
U-M led by as many as 10 in the remainder of the period and Flaherty, Thompson and senior Madison Ristovski combined to go 7-for-8 from the free throw line to give Michigan the five-point win.
Freshman Hallie Thome scored 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting to go with four rebounds to lead the Maize and Blue. Flaherty scored 17 points with five assists, and Thompson went for 13 points, six assists and five rebounds. Freshman Boogie Brozoski, in her fourth career start, recorded seven points, seven assists and a career-best seven rebounds as U-M outrebounded the Wildcats, 42-27.
The Maize and Blue opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run, getting four points from freshman Nicole Munger and a triple from Thompson, to regain a 20-15 lead on the Wildcats with 8:13 to go in the frame. After a couple of ties and lead changes, a Thome layup with 3:06 on the clock put Michigan back in front, 24-22, for good for the rest of the quarter.
U-M hit the half with a 30-25 lead on the Wildcats after Flaherty hit a pair of free throws with just 47 second remaining to complete the scoring. Michigan was paced by eight points from Thome and seven from Flaherty.
Back-to-back Thompson to Thome baskets forced a Northwestern timeout with 5:39 on the clock as Michigan took a 41-32 lead. Brozoski nailed a triple on Michigan's next possession to push the U-M lead to double digits for the first time, 44-32, with 4:39 on the clock. Flaherty nailed a corner triple to send Michigan to the fourth quarter with a 50-39 lead.
Michigan concludes the regular season on Sunday (Feb. 28), traveling to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights. Tip is set for 2 p.m., and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
