HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Backed by 14 hits and a pitching staff that allowed no earned runs for the sixth game this year, the No. 19 University of Michigan baseball team cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Sophomore lefty Oliver Jaskie earned his third win in the Thursday night (March 10) contest at Les Murakami Stadium.
Sophomore Jake Bivens led off in the top of the first with a single through the left side, but three consecutive outs prevented him from advancing.
After three scoreless innings, the Wolverines did not collect another hit until the top of the fourth inning when junior designated hitter Harrison Wenson sent a two-out single up the middle. The momentum allowed senior Cody Bruder to follow with another first-pitch single up the middle, giving Michigan two baserunners. A walk to sophomore Drew Lugbauer then loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning with no runs for the Wolverines.
With just two hits recorded through the first three innings, Hawaii threatened with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the third, but Jaskie and the Michigan defense stranded the runner on a flyout, a strikeout and a groundout.
Through five complete, the Wolverines and Rainbow Warriors were tied at 0-0. In the top of the sixth, however, the Wolverines batted around, recording five hits to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Matt Ramsay jumpstarted the inning with a leadoff with a single up the middle, quickly taking second on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. One out later, a single from Wenson put runners on the corners for Michigan, and it was Bruder who sent a timely RBI single through the right side to score Ramsay and held U-M take a 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second, Lugbauer then blasted an RBI double down the line, clearing the bases and pushing Michigan ahead by three. With Lugbauer in scoring position and two outs, junior Michael Brdar followed with the final RBI single of the inning to push the Wolverines up, 4-0.
Despite the four-run lead, the Wolverines did not let up on their offensive attack. Ramsay again led off the top of the seventh inning with a single, taking second on a base hit from junior Carmen Benedetti. The pair then advanced on a strikeout-double steal, and Bruder loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch. One out later, a two-RBI single from freshman pinch hitter Jonathan Engelmann scored Ramsay and Benedetti for a 6-0 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, allowing Michigan to take home a 6-0 lead and improve to 8-3 on the season.
Despite limited offensive support through the first five innings, Jaskie stranded runners in three separate innings and had two innings where he faced the minimum three batters. The starter tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three, before junior righty Mac Lozer took the mound in relief in the bottom of the sixth. Lozer closed out the inning, recording a groundout and a flyout to strand two Hawaii baserunners.
In the bottom of the seventh, freshman lefty reliever William Tribucher took the mound, striking out three straight Rainbow Warriors. The lefty now has 10 strikeouts in just seven innings pitched this season.
Freshman Troy Miller then took the mound in the eighth, allowing no runs on no hits. In the bottom of the ninth, redshirt freshman Grant Reuss made his first career appearance, allowing no runs on no hits and walking one.
In total, Michigan recorded 14 hits the victory, holding Hawaii to just three on the night. Neither team recorded an error in the outing.
